Day 3
Lake Manyara National Park – Ngorongoro Crater
Drive to Ngorongoro Crater and after a refreshing lunch decent 2000 feet onto the crater floor, where you will experience the great variety and density of wildlife that lives in the second largest Caldera on earth.
Experience a solitary game-drive in the late afternoon, as most people have left the crater-floor. Silent beauty beneath soft rays highlights increased animal activity as the sun fades. Wrap up warm as the sunsets, for nights at the Crater Rim are always chilly.
Dinner and Overnight: Ngorongoro, Serena Safari Lodge FB
Days 4 – 5
Nasera Rock
Passing Ngorongoro crater rim descend through the really impressive landscape to Oldupai Gorge, known as the ‘Cradle of Mankind,’ where man’s first footsteps were discovered. Continue on to our camp at the Gol Mountains.
Truly magnificent landscape, the isolated area includes the Gol Mountains – a series of whale-backed ridges on the edge of sensational short grass plains. Out of the mountains come the Sanjan and Ol Karien river gorges – spectacular views and amongst other things, Rupels Griffon Vulture colonies nest here. Masai guides will escort you on a walk through the Gorge that is sure to remain etched on your mind. The mountains are largely overlooked late March to May due to rain, but the volcanic soil turns a lush green and the wildebeest flood in. Engatakiti Valley at the foot of the Gol Mountains is scattered with wildebeest as far as the eye can see. The rain – itself a rarity is a significant blessing in an otherwise scorched landscape and it transforms the Gol Mountain into something akin to the Garden of Eden.
Along a dusty, solitary track facing north and lost in the wilderness, is an area where a giant fig tree stands – over 1000 years old. Here a Masai will tell you the folklore and traditions that evolve around the ancient tree – providing a glimpse into his tribal culture. We found the tree 24 years ago and have accumulated many hours talking with our particular Masai friend, who guards and christened it the ‘Cathedral Tree.’
Important: The track to the Fig tree is extremely dusty and impassable if raining, making the excursion a real adventure. You may well find the Great Migration here.
